OBJECTIVE

The goal of the project was to create a 3D model of the residential building as per the Energy Modeling standards of Revit, and then extract the gbxml files and provide it to the customer. The customer wanted to feed this model into his Design Builder energy efficiency software for a thorough energy analysis.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Our client, a prominent Energy Consultancy in the USA, sought our expertise to take care of the time consuming 3D modelling part of their projects. The objective was to create a detailed 3D model of a residential apartment building using Revit, incorporating all necessary information for the energy model. The project involved extracting gbXML file for performing energy analysis through Design Builder.

CHALLENGES

The primary challenge was the creation of a precise energy model, considering surface adjacencies. A meticulous approach was essential for conducting accurate energy analysis without any alterations to the model.

Translating the Revit design model into a Building Energy Model (BEM) using gbXML is tedious and prone to errors. Success depends on factors like a well-structured building model (accurately defined spaces and walls), the quality of the Revit gbXML writer/exporter, and the encoding ability of gbXML to capture relevant information. Errors may occur when any of these factors are deficient.

Modelers need to adopt specific modeling techniques to accurately export the Revit model to gbXML for more effective energy analysis.

PROJECT DELIVERABLES:

Well aware of these challenges, our expert team delivered the gbXML file to customer specifications, which served as an accurate input for deriving valuable insights for sustainability consulting services, energy-efficient design, and energy retrofits. It enabled our client to perform detailed energy analysis and contribute to sustainable building practices.
